Dirt Cheap Laundry Soap

Dirt cheap laundry soap “a DIY homemade laundry soap” was a life saver to me when our family was trying to live frugally and reverse being 33k in debt.

I’ve used my dirt cheap laundry soap for close to 10 years. When I first was introduced to it by a dear friend I was drowning in debt and the piles of laundry from my 3 small children under the age of 5.

Dirt cheap laundry soap is a liquid laundry detergent that is made with borax, and sunlight soap. I came to really love and enjoy the happy sunny scent. Additionally my husband who was allergic to laundry detergent as a youth and teen was able to successfully tolerate have his clothing laundered with our homemade dirt cheap laundry detergent. He has lived comfortably and reaction free for 10 years now.

This homemade laundry soap recipe makes five gallons and costs you less than a small container of commercial liquid laundry soap.

Dirt Cheap Laundry Soap Recipe

  • 1 cup Borax
  • 1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
  • 1 bar of Sunlight soap ( found this down the laundry isle)
  • Water
  • 5-gallon bucket with lid

Grate the Sunlight soap and place in a pot with 6 cups of water. Melt the soap using medium-high heat. Stir gently, and then add Borax and washing soda making sure to mix the mixture together as best as you can. You want to make sure the Borax and the Washing Soda are dissolved. Fill the bucket up halfway with hot water and then add in the soap to the water.

Finish filling the bucket with warm water and stir. Close the lid on the bucket and allow it to sit for 24 hours. The natural soap should appear watery with globs of gel. Use as is or I liked to mix it together to make a smoother consistency.

The dirt cheap soap can be divided up into smaller containers or stored in the bucket depending on space. Use ½ cup for high efficiency front load washers and one cup for regular top-load machines.

Dirt cheap laundry soap was a life saver. It was able to tackle the tough stains. I’d eventually grow the number of children’s clothing being washed from 3 all the way to 7. Between having a newborn and requiring something gentle enough for her skin. But also tough enough for my other 6 children – 4 of those being adventurous mud loving boys. It fit the bill perfectly for me and my situation. I’ve since switched to a High Efficiency Washer and use a safe alternative to this recipe now. I enjoyed it so much I thought it was important to share however. It was an important part of our debt free journey. And hope that if it works with your washing machine it could be a way to save a few extra bucks every few months.

  1. Love this idea. I went to dirt-cheap dishwashing soap…and we were happy to return to our regular junk washing pods after a few weeks because…it didn’t work. I’m excited to hear from someone with such experience that this didn’t destroy your clothes and worked well for y’all!
